Short-Term Independent Study (STIS)

Short-Term Independent Study (STIS) is available to students in grades 1–8 who will be absent from school for 3–15 school days. STIS allows students to continue their learning and complete assigned coursework while temporarily away from school. Families must provide at least 10 school days’ notice before the planned absence. For students with an IEP, at least 30 days’ notice is required to allow time for the student’s IEP to be reviewed and an amendment to be completed and signed before the student begins STIS. Families who are considering STIS should contact their student’s school as early as possible to discuss eligibility, timelines, and the required process.
